What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin, custom-made shells of porcelain that are permanently adhered to the front of your teeth to hide any cosmetic imperfections. They can instantly transform the appearance of your teeth to hide issues such as:
- Chipped, broken, or misshaped teeth
- Teeth that have been worn down due to clenching and grinding or a bite that is off
- Permanent discolorations or stains, such as those caused by previous dental procedures, overconsumption of fluoride, or medications such as tetracycline
- Slightly misaligned teeth
- Teeth that are uneven in size
- Minor gaps between teeth
Benefits of porcelain veneers
Veneer technology has come a long way since the concept of veneers was first introduced. Today’s porcelain veneers offer many benefits:
- They are more resistant to stains than other veneer materials such as resin composite
- Porcelain is partially translucent and reflects light to mimic the appearance of your natural teeth
- They are fully customizable to match the color, size, shape, and length of your other teeth
- Porcelain veneers are extremely thin, so less healthy enamel needs to be taken off your teeth to prepare them for the veneers
The veneer placement process
Getting porcelain veneers placed usually involves a few trips to Dr. Cintron’s office, but when patients see their brand-new smiles, they find it is more than worth the wait!
The first step is a consultation appointment with Dr. Cintron. This is a crucial step in the veneer process because it enables Dr. Cintron to discuss your cosmetic goals with you and learn about what you’d like to change about the appearance of your teeth, as well as thoroughly evaluate your mouth to determine whether veneers will work for your unique teeth and desired results. She will also take the time to discuss the veneer placement process so you know what to expect and will answer any questions you have about veneers.
Next, Dr. Cintron will prepare your teeth for the veneers. This typically involves removing about half of a millimeter of tooth enamel from the teeth that will have veneers placed. This must be done to ensure that the veneers fit seamlessly into your smile and do not change your bite patterns, which can place unnecessary stress on both your healthy teeth and the veneers that can lead to chips or breakage. If needed for your comfort, Dr. Cintron can provide local anesthetic prior to preparing the tooth. Once the teeth are prepped, dental impressions are taken of your teeth so that your veneers can be custom- fabricated to fit your mouth perfectly. Some patients may have temporary veneers placed at this time while they wait for the permanent veneers to be constructed.
Once your permanent veneers are ready (usually about two to four weeks later), you will return to the office and Dr. Cintron will check their fit and appearance and make any adjustments to the size and color as needed. Once you are both happy with the way they look and fit, she will clean and etch your teeth to roughen them so that the bonding material will adhere better. Dr. Cintron will then use a permanent cement to bond the veneers to your teeth with the assistance of a special ultraviolet light that cures the glue. Once she has checked your final bite and removed any extra cement from your mouth, you are free to go enjoy your brand-new smile!
