What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease begins to develop when plaque is allowed to build up along and underneath the gum line. Plaque is a sticky substance that is left as a film on teeth and along the gums. The earliest stage of gum disease, gingivitis, normally presents itself through the following symptoms:
– Inflamed or tender gums
– Red, swollen gums
– Gums that bleed when you brush
While gum disease is at this very early stage, it is easily reversible. When allowed to develop, it will turn into an advanced stage called periodontitis. This stage of gum disease will start to impact the supporting bones that hold your teeth in place.
