Gum Disease Treatment

Protecting your smile from gum disease, resolving gingivitis conservatively and quickly

Our valued patients travel globally to The International Center for Dental Excellence in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. These individuals benefit from the considerable talents of our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Yolanda Cintron.

The gums play a starring role in creating, restoring, and sustaining a jaw-dropping gorgeous smile. Furthermore, Dr. Cintron has an array of conservative, precision techniques and treatments for gum disease, from “early” gingivitis to advanced periodontitis.

The phases of the disease

When partnering with a skilled and experienced cosmetic dentist like Dr. Cintron, there are numerous opportunities to detect gum disease in its earliest stages. Early detection supports early treatment. Since the disease has not progressed to the point of causing severe damage, such treatment is largely tissue-preserving and not as invasive or aggressive as regenerative techniques designed to restore or rebuild the gums.

Early detection is also essential since many oral conditions (including gingivitis) are “silent” in their earliest stages. The signs themselves are often quite subtle and may include:

  • Gums that appear darker than your “normal” (everyone has a different “baseline”)
  • Gums that look swollen
  • Gums that may be tender when you press on them or when they come in contact with toothbrushes and floss
  • “Pink in the sink,” which is our way of saying that you may notice blood during brushing, flossing, and otherwise caring for your teeth

Dr. Cintron has the know-how and the tools to identify early problems with the gums, teeth, and other parts of the mouth. From there, she can recommend treatments to stop the disease from progressing to periodontitis. During this advanced stage of the disease, you risk losing bone for good. As the attachments break down between the teeth and gums, soft tissues and hard tissues are progressively lost. To restore the mouth to function would, at this stage, require more invasive treatments – such as gum and bone grafting.

You may not be brushing other areas of your mouth, such as your tongue, as well as you should. Or, you may not be diligent about flossing. Starches and sugars in the foods and beverages that we consume then mix with harmful oral bacteria to produce destructive plaque, which inflames soft tissues and releases toxins that erode “supports” such as bone. Teeth may become loose. Damage to the teeth may be irreversible.

We can also jump-start a renewed and improved hygiene program with professional cleaning administered by one of our skilled hygienists. The standard cleaning removes stubborn plaque build-up, or “tartar.” A “deep clean,” or Scaling and Root Planing, gets underneath the gums and smooths out those root surfaces that tend to accumulate bacteria and other “nasties.” We may recommend antibacterial rinses or medicated products to heal your gums further.
