IV Sedation

Fort Lauderdale, FL area patients can use IV sedation to enjoy less stressful or anxious dental treatments

Having good oral health is essential. Patients must get appropriate treatment right away when problems arise. However, if you are worried about your oral health but the idea of visiting the dental office or seeking treatment in the dental chair gives you feelings of anxiety, you may not take the initiative to get the dental help you need. In situations like this, patients are putting their oral health at risk and may need to deal with more damaging or expensive dental work in the future if they leave these problems untreated. Many of these issues only get worse and can lead to a more uncomfortable appointment in the future when dental work needs to be completed. Instead, patients should ask their dental team about IV sedation for dental treatment with Dr. Yolanda Cintron of Fort Lauderdale.

Why might I need sedation?

Sedation methods in dental care are often readily available for individuals who have anxiety around visiting the dental chair. However, this is not the only reason a patient may consider the advantages of sedation. Sedation can help for patients who:

  • Have a lower pain threshold than others
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Have difficulty sitting still for long periods
  • Have sensitive teeth
  • Require several dental procedures during one visit

What is IV sedation?

There are several different ways dentists approach sedation dentistry. Dr. Yolanda Cintron is pleased to provide a few methods, including IV sedation. IV sedation is a specialized type of sedation that delivers medication directly into the bloodstream with an IV. A needle is inserted into the back of the hand or in the arm. It is attached to IV fluids with sedation medication. When treatment begins, the doctor will administer the drug into the bloodstream, where it travels through the body. IV sedation often takes effect immediately, and patients will enjoy the feeling of being relaxed and comfortable. This method of sedation often makes patients feel drowsy even though they are conscious, and many have little to no recollection of their appointment due to temporary amnesia. This makes it an excellent fit for patients who are worried about the dental work being completed.

What are the benefits of IV sedation?

There are a few advantages to having IV sedation performed. First, it takes effect almost immediately. Patients will feel instantly calm and relaxed. The medication can be administered in the proper dosage to ensure it is effective, and it is entirely safe and appropriate for many dental procedures available in our practice.
