Signs Your Dental Crown Needs to Be Replaced

A dental crown is durable enough to stay in place for up to 20 years. However, sometimes your crown may need replacement sooner because if you ignore the signs, your tooth underneath will suffer damage and sensitivity. Sometimes, the need for crown replacement is obvious, such as when it falls out. However, it’s not always straightforward that your crown needs replacement. At The International Center for Dental Excellence, we know a thing or two about dental crowns, and these are the signs to keep your eyes peeled for when your crown replacement is due:

  • It’s too old: While a dental crown can last up to two decades, the average life of a dental crown is 10-15 years. So, if your crown is more than a decade old, keep a close eye on it, and have it replaced sooner before it becomes problematic.
  • Pain and swelling around the crown: If your dental crown triggers pain and swelling, talk to Dr. Yolanda Cintron for replacement. Sensitivity on the crowned teeth means the crown is wrongly placed, damaged, or too old to offer the required protection to the tooth.
  • Receding gums: If you don’t take proper care of your teeth and gums, there is an excellent chance of infection attacking the gums surrounding the crown. Receding gums is a sign of gum disease, so you should see your dentist immediately for treatment. After assessing your crown, the dentist will determine whether it needs replacement.

  • Signs of wear and tear on the crown: While symptoms of worn-down crowns could be due to age, it could also be a sign of a more severe condition like bruxism. If you notice chips or cracks on your dental crowns, you should see a dentist to determine the cause. While minor chips are repairable, a replacement will be the best alternative for extensive damage. If teeth grinding is the cause of chips on your crown, your dentist will advise you to wear a custom-made night guard to protect your crown and entire smile.
