“Stress-free” dentistry is essential. It means a lot of different things at the International Center for Dental Excellence in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Our dentist, Dr. Yolanda Cintron, is accomplished in various dental disciplines–from cosmetic and holistic dentistry to sedation dentistry. When combined with our team’s calming and soothing manner, sedation represents yet another way our clinic can optimally support patients’ comfort and safety.
“Sedation” generally refers to those medications and methods used to put patients at ease during dental visits and treatments. Dental fear and anxiety are common and can stand in the way of individuals getting the preventive care they need to be happy and healthy. We encourage you to bring any concerns or questions to us. Knowing this information, we can address your specific and unique situations.
Many patients can benefit from “conscious sedation” dentistry. This approach involves prescribing a sedative medication, which the patient takes before treatment to induce a feeling of relaxation. These medications are taken orally (by mouth). We provide clear instructions on what to expect and what to do before, during, and after your visit. Patients have no worries but remain conscious and awake. They are not “put under,” as is the case with deeper levels of sedation. Some individuals may doze off, and little to no memories of the visit may linger. But patients can be easily roused and can respond to our dental team.
Dr. Cintron’s unique approach to no-stress, conscious sedation also includes the use of nitrous oxide. Also called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a form of minimal sedation–safe even for children! It takes effect quickly and wears off just as fast. When combined with oral sedatives, nitrous oxide sedation requires the arrangement of transportation to and from our center. Patients may experience lingering drowsiness and sluggish reaction times. So, driving or operating machinery is unsafe after these sedatives are administered.
Each day we see what a tremendous difference conscious sedation makes. Due to fear, patients who haven’t visited the dentist in a while feel comfortable and at ease! This approach also supports utmost comfort during extended visits or when undergoing complex procedures. It helps us safely treat fidgety patients. Our patients with bad gag reflexes also appreciate that they can relax. Many common “triggers” of dental fear, such as needles, are minimized with our sedative approach to dentistry and our center’s comfortable surroundings and amenities (kick back with soothing music or distract yourself with guilty pleasure TV!).
